COVIDSafe Considerations – Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems

There is currently no evidence to prove that COVID-19 can be spread through HVAC systems. However, adjusting the settings of the HVAC system has been recommended by experts to help minimise the risk of COVID-19 spreading in your workplace, by:

  • allowing more air circulation in common areas
  • limiting or not using recirculated air
  • increasing outside air intake.

While you may not be responsible for the control or maintenance of the HVAC system, you should ensure you have taken all reasonably practicable steps to ensure the system has been maintained and that risks to health and safety that arise from any shut down or restarting of the HVAC system have been eliminated or minimised. This includes seeking confirmation from the building owner or facilities manager that the HVAC system has been inspected and properly maintained by a competent person and in accordance with all recognised standards and the HVAC system complies with relevant Australian standards.
